Recurrent routines: Analyzing and supporting orchestration in technology-enhanced primary classrooms
نویسندگان
چکیده
The increasing presence of multiple Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the classroom does not guarantee an improvement of the learning experiences of students, unless it is also accompanied by pedagogically effective orchestration of those technologies. In order to help teachers in this endeavour, it can be useful to understand how this orchestration takes place in real-world classrooms, and to provide teachers with professional development opportunities that can be easily applied to their everyday classroom practice. This paper describes a qualitative field study conducted in five primary school classrooms where a new collaborative software was introduced alongside existing classroom technology. For six months, teachers designed and orchestrated classroom activities in these authentic, technologically-rich settings. The analysis of the resulting activity designs and enactments uncovered a limited set of recurrent elements of teacher practice, or routines. These routines and their graphical representation are posited as a useful analysis tool for researchers in understanding complex teacher practices with ICT. Moreover, the authors propose that these routines offer new opportunities for professional development of teachers in effectively using ICT in their classrooms. Initial uses of these routines in teacher workshops, with encouraging results, are also presented. 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Classroom orchestration: Synthesis
Orchestration is an approach to Technology Enhanced Learning that emphasizes attention to the challenges of classroom use of technology, with a particular focus on supporting teachers’ roles. The present collection of papers on orchestration highlights broad agreement that classrooms are variable and complex and that teachers have an important role in adapting materials for use in their own cla...
متن کاملStudying Teacher Orchestration Load in Technology-Enhanced Classrooms - A Mixed-Method Approach and Case Study
Teacher orchestration of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) processes plays a major role in students’ outcomes, especially in face-to-face classrooms. However, few studies look into the fine-grained details of how such orchestration unfolds, the challenges and cognitive overload that using technologies at a classroom level pose for teachers. This paper proposes a mixed-method approach to the st...

This paper argues that the emphasis on orchestration as a metaphor for teaching in technology-enhanced learning (TEL) environments, featured in recent academic discussions, is an opportunity to broaden the scope of the inquiry into educational technology. Drawing on sociological literature and research that investigated the systemic factors that influence the uptake of ICTs in formal and inform...
متن کاملThe Orchestration Matrix: A Tool to Design Heterogeneous Classroom Ecosystems
Modern classrooms are complex socio-technical spaces where multiple heterogeneous legacy tools and novel technologies coexist. The design and the study of such technological ecosystems (or of single technologies that have to integrate into one such ecosystem) is still under-researched, and we lack established conceptual tools to understand how a learning scenario is orchestrated across such het...
متن کاملOrchestration in a networked classroom: Where the teacher's real-time enactment matters
Designing for orchestration needs an emphasis on the criticality of the teacher’s agency, skills and understanding of pedagogies and technologies in orchestrating the classroom beyond the provision of material scripts and technological supports. Drawing on data from the collaborative classrooms that use a collaborative technology called GroupScribbles (GS), we share the work of a teacher who su...
